What payouts are
Payouts are disbursements from a business to the people and companies it owes, such as marketplace sellers, gig workers, creators or insurance claimants. They are often sent in bulk and on a schedule. Platforms often hold the funds first in an FBO (for benefit of) account, then pay each recipient.
How it works
The business funds its payout account, then sends payment instructions by file or API. Each payout travels on the rail chosen for it: ACH for routine payments, instant payments for speed, or a wire for large sums.
- 01 · FUND The business moves money into the account it pays out from.
- 02 · SEND It sends payout instructions by API or file, one by one or in bulk.
- 03 · RECONCILE Each payout settles on its rail and is matched back to the platform's ledger.
| Rail | Settlement | Common payouts |
|---|---|---|
| ACH | One to two business days | Scheduled payroll and seller payouts |
| Same-day ACH | Same business day | Faster routine payouts |
| RTP or FedNow | Seconds, 24/7/365 | On-demand and weekend payouts |
| Wire | Real time, during Fedwire hours | Large or urgent payments |
Actual timing also depends on cutoffs and on each bank's funds availability policy.
When businesses use it
- Marketplaces paying sellers after each sale or on a set schedule
- Gig and creator platforms offering instant cash-out
- Insurers paying claims and lenders disbursing loans
- Payroll, contractor and earned wage access payments
- Refunds, rebates and rewards sent back to customers
Cross River supports instant payouts over RTP and FedNow through a single API, settling 24/7/365. Its other options include same-day ACH, wires and push-to-card disbursements. See instant payments at Cross River.
Common questions
What is an instant payout?
A payout usable within seconds over RTP or FedNow, or in near real time when pushed to an eligible debit or prepaid card. This guide to push-to-card explains the card option.
Do businesses need an FBO account for payouts?
Not always. Platforms that hold funds on behalf of users often use one, and the bank holds the pooled funds while a ledger records each user's share.
Which rail should a business use for payouts?
It depends on speed, size and cost. ACH suits scheduled payouts, instant payments suit on-demand cash-out, and wires suit large, urgent amounts. Many platforms offer more than one.
